"How do you mail those beautifully embellished cards
without destroying the card or the envelope?"
I have several answers for that because it depends on whether I know that the card will be embellished a lot before I start the project.
The problem with highly embellished or multi layered cards is that they are usually too thick to fit into the regular envelope. Then when you "cram" them into the envelope, the risk is high that the embellishment may not look as pretty when the card gets to its destination.
So if I know ahead of time that this card will be very layered or have lots of brads or flowers on it, then I make my card just a little smaller than normal. The usual card measures 5 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches and so I cut my cardstock such that my card will measure 5 1/4 by 4 inches. This way, I can have a thick flower on top (or several) or the card can have lots of layers on it but it will still slide nicely into the envelope.
When I have metal embellishments on the front of the card and I am worried that they may poke through the envelope, then I cut another piece of cardstock the same size as the card front and I will include that in the envelope just right on top of the metal embellishment. This extra piece of card stock is a great way to protect the card as it will be running through the postal service sorting machines.
When neither of these options work, then I resort to a padded envelope to mail my beautiful card with all its gorgeous embellishments. After all, I am mailing my card to someone really special and if I could, I'd crawl into the envelope too to see the beautiful smile as my card is read.
